Printing Suggestions for all “Downloadable” Products by

The Five Finger Paragraph©

Printing (Individual Books)

· Printing in color is essential for these materials, especially for younger students.  If you do not have a color printer, try using colored highlighters to color the lines on the WallCharts and the sentences/paragraphs in the books.  Or, in the very least, write the words of each color (red, yellow, blue, purple, or green) next to each passage/line that should be that color.

· Although you may use any thickness of paper when printing the texts, if you plan on printing the pages so that they are duplexed (double-sided, with page 1 on the front side of the paper and page 2 on the reverse side of the paper), you will have better results if you print on 28# (28 pound paper) or heavier paper (32# for the interior pages is used for my books).  That way, the ink won't show through when you print on the reverse side.

· For printing book covers, you have two options:

(a)print the covers on heavier card stock (80#, 90#, or 100#; most small, residential printers won't pull 110# or heavier card stock) and laminate covers.

(b)print the covers on regular paper and bind in a binder  with the rest of the book.

Binding (Individual Books)

· There are several choices for binding.  If you plan on using self-covers (see “a” and "b" above) printed on heavier card stock, laminate them (you can also use clear shelf paper) before binding.  Kinko's, The UPS Store or a local Office Supply store should also be able to laminate and hole punch the books for you.

· Take printed covers to be laminated and have book comb- or coil-bound while there.

· Obtain a 3-ring binder, hole-punch book (including covers, if you like) and place entire book in binder.  Get a binder with plastic pockets on the front and back covers and you can slide the printed copies of the book covers into the pockets.

· Obtain a 3-prong folder, punch holes in the book and bind book in folder.

· If all else fails, place loose pages of book inside a folder so pages are more or less protected.

Printing and Binding Classroom Kits

· All of the above instructions apply in printing items in the classroom kit.

· The only difference is in printing the transparencies.  Make sure that you are printing on the reverse side of the transparency film when inserting the transparency sheet into the printer so that you can write with a Vis a Vis pen or dry erase marker on the smooth side.  Reverse and obverse files both are included in the downloadable classroom kit files for use with different brands of transparency film.

· Make sure that WallCharts, Bookmarkers, and Quick Guide Cards are laminated so that they can be used frequently by students.  Fine point dry erase markers work better for student use (smaller point).  See Ancillary Materials below.

· A complete copy of these printing instructions will be included with each classroom kit downloaded.

Ancillary Materials

· All pages (in file “Ancillary Materials 1”) should be printed on card stock (anything between 60# and 90# will do) and laminated for use.  If you don’t have access to a laminator, use self-stick laminating film or clear shelf paper.  Either of the latter two should be applied to beyond the edges of the printed pages, sealing the edges of the film with your fingernails or a ruler’s edge.  Cut off excess lamination.  Don’t forget to print WallChart #4A on the back side of WallChart #4.

· If you don’t have access to card stock, any heavy-weight paper will work (24# or up), but will not last as long.  All pages can be printed on just one side except the Quick Guide Cards™.  Quick Guide Cards™ are placed on the page so the fronts and reverses will print properly (if you place the paper in your printer properly.  Or, to save paper and lamination, you can print WallChart #2 or #3 on the back of WallChart #4 and WallChart #5 on the back of #6.  See your printer’s instructions for printing on the reverse of documents (may be called “duplexing”).

· You can write on the laminated pages with either a dry erase marker or a Vis a Vis marker (an extra fine point will have a small enough point for writing many words on a line).  To erase, use a soft tissue or dry cloth to erase dry erase marker or a moistened tissue to erase Vis a Vis marker.  Don’t leave markings on the laminated sheets overnight or a lot of elbow grease will be required to get off the markings.

· Bookmarkers (in file “Ancillary Materials 2”) are designed to be printed on both sides of the paper.  See your printer’s instructions for printing on the reverse of documents (may be called “duplexing”).  The fronts of the Bookmarkers are placed on the sheet so that the reverse of the cards will be in exactly the correct position, if placed in the printer correctly.  Pay Attentionthere are two different versions of the Bookmarkers included.  Page 2 is set up so that Page 3 can be printed on the reverse.  Page 4 is set up so that Page 5 can be printed on the reverse.  They are not interchangeable.
